Scream By-The-Numbers

One of our readers Ryan has taken the lengthy but necessary time to clock the appearances of the main trio in the original Scream trilogy. He used a stopwatch and only timed when they were speaking or physically seen. We think the results will surprise you!

SCREAM

Sidney: 41 minutes & 44 seconds
Gale: 14 minutes & 09 seconds
Dewey: 10 minutes & 59 seconds

SCREAM 2

Sidney: 40 minutes & 02 seconds
Gale: 22 minutes & 19 seconds
Dewey: 16 minutes and 25 seconds

SCREAM 3

Sidney: 33 minutes & 06 seconds
Gale: 28 minutes & 19 seconds
Dewey: 26 minutes & 43 seconds

Ryan also made the nice collage featured above (click thumbnail for full size).

  1. That is surprising–especially #3. (I think the finale sealed the deal for Neve, though.) Then again, Anthony Hopkins won an Academy Award for The Silence of the Lambs when he had only 16 minutes of screen time…

  7. WOW! Only Neve has a substantial amount of screen time, the rest are more like cameos! Does this mean Drew had more screen time in the first one than Dewey?! It’s surprising how you can’t tell while watching the film, they seem to be in it all throughout.

  13. Dewey only 10 minutes in the first? Uhhh… I don’t believe that. Well… maybe. No, I don’t.

But Sidney in Scream 3 is a surprise. People say how it’s all abou Dewey and Gale but her look, Sidney appeared more than they did.

  15. That’s pretty cool. I would’ve bet money that Courteney was in Scream 3 more than Neve. Hmm. Anyway, love the collage!

  23. Hi everyone, I’m the one who timed everything. I’m actually going to try to time Randy and Cotton’s screentime since besidesthe three mentioned, they were in all three films (Cotton’s in Scream 1 should be easy, LOL). I was also planning on Jennifer from Scream 3, Casey Becker, and Cici. Maybe others, I don’t know. After I get Randy and Cotton finished, which brings me to….

Thanks for the suggestion about Ghostface screentime. But, should I include the time the voice is talking to Drew, Sarah Michelle, Neve, ect? I guess it’s the killer, but I’m not sure.

BTW, I wasn’t surprised at Dewey’s in Scream 1. If you don’t believe it Anthony, fine, but remember that Scream 1 is about 10 minutes shorter than the other two, Neve has the majroity of the time, all the little subplots with Gale & Kenny and such, and most of the other time goes to the killings.

And on the Sidney Scream 3 thing, it was quite intense doing her’s. She was the first I did, and I was nervous doing it. I split the three films (especially Scream 3 into three acts) and the first act I considered from the very beginning to when Jennifer’s house is blown up. Neve had about 5 1/2 minutes up until that point (45-ish minutes into it). Courteney had the most in act one with David behind her. Then act 2 I thought was from when Sidney came out of hiding until she gets the call at the police station from the killer. I’d say Sidney took half of act 2 and Gale/Dewey/Jennifer took the other half. Then in act 3 it secured Sidney to come in first because she’s almost never off the screen.

***Please not I also included their portrait at the end of the film in the credits and their name in the cast list.***

  31. None of this surprises me. It’s exactly what i expected actually. I remember watching the original Scream last week and being very surprised at the little screen time Courtney had, and comparing it to Scream 3 it’s pretty obvious her character is becoming the central of the series the more sequels are released.

As for “Scream 4,” people didn’t understand how Courtney was able to wrap that early into shooting and though it was because her part was small. That’s not the case at all, all they did was shoot all her parts first. Her screen time will probably be more than Neve, but less than how much she appeared in Scream 3 since they have new central characters they need to focus on.

  33. Are you counting the scenes they are in or literally just when they are seen? Like if it cuts to only Tatum, but Sidney is still there, do you not count it?

  35. Anthony, I count whenever they speak, scream, whimper, ect, and when they are seen on-screen , in or out of focus.

  39. I think you should only do when the costume is on screen. You could do the voice separate. That would be interesting to know how much time the killer spends on the phone in each film. Hopefully the killers have free nights and weekends. lol Obviously this was a brilliant idea YOU had, but I personally wouldn’t have added in their name on the cast list and stuff like that. And now it has me wondering how much the three of them are in the film – appearances only. I wouldn’t have counted phone conversations and stuff, BUT I didn’t think of this and didn’t do the work, so that’s just me. On behalf of this site, thank you for doing what you did. It’s very interesting! I’ve had two separate conversations about it today.

  41. I’ve actually timed all the short performances the past two nights: Casey, Cici, Maureen Evans, Cotton 1 & 3. I still have Jennifer, Randy 1 & 2, Cotton 2, Tatum, the killer voice/costume, and the five killers. I’ll post after I complete everything. It won’t be until next weekend at the most. I hopefully will have some free time this weekend.
