Kevin Williamson’s Scream 3 Opening Revealed

In the upcoming Still Screaming: The Ultimate Scary Movie Documentary, unprecedented light will be shed on the Frankensteinian creation of Scream 3. Director Ryan Turek has used his website Shock Till You Drop as a venue to release a short clip that goes a long way.

Scream 1-3 Editor Patrick Lussier explains “It wasnt so much about multiple endings in Scream 3 as it was multiple beginnings. There were so many variations on the opening sequence.”

Scream 3 Screenwriter and fanboy punching bag Ehren Kruger recalls his own early scenario: “I remember a sequence with an actor ‘Ben Damon’ in a car, where the killer was calling the actor from inside the trunk of the car.”

However Kruger drops a bombshell in recalling Kevin Williamson’s original idea before the development cycle had begun: “There was an early version in Kevin’s original treatment where the opening sequence was Sidney and a friend being attacked at home, and then Sidney ultimately killing the killer – and unmasking the killer – and it’s some fan and this drives her into hiding.”

Turek also posted a new interview with Wes Craven, culled in part from questions recently solicited from our friendly forum members. While Scream 4-centric and informative in its own right, there’s a golden Scream 3 nugget in there:

“Oh, [Scream 3] was a nightmare. Kevin wasn’t available and Ehren, bless his heart, and I and another writer worked on that script all through production. I went back and watched all three films and I had a lot of fun with all of them. That last one was more towards Scooby-Doo and less Scream.”

Reader Advisory: Comments may contain SCREAM 4 SPOILERS
  1. that opening to scream 3 would have been amazing i always felt that the actual opening for scream 3 was rather lacluster

  2. i would have liked them to have shot kevins version of the beginning and see how it would have turned out and then seen if that would have been the right choice for it???? also scream 3 was kind of a nightmare Wes is so right about that

  3. Sound awesome! and totally unexpected. Seriously Williamson knows what he’s doing. Just let the man have control

  4. thank god they aknowledge that scream 3 is basically scooby doo lol

  5. I’m soo Glad Wes see’s Scr3am the way I do
It’s definitely amusing, but wasn’t Scream by a long shot.

  6. What a hell?? the original Scream 3 opening was Sidney killing Ghostface??

What a twist!! I imagine only Sidney knows the identity of this killer and that is the reason for she was hiding. Then all the murders happened, Sid is forced to came out and faces the mastermind killer. In this scenario it could be the true rumors of Stu Markers returns or his twin brother (another spoiler from Scream 3’s filming days). But, of course, the ultimate killer is Sidney’s brother.

Kevin should write a complete book of his original ideas for Scream trilogy.

  7. Whatever the original idea for Kevin, it would definitely be better than the stupid idea of Ehren with these Stab actors in Hollywood with weak dialogue and exaggerated performances. If Kevin could go back in time to fix and finish the trilogy as smart as he had done in the first two movies…

  8. This is why Williamson rocks. His ending would have been way better than Cotton getting killed in the opening scene!

  9. I really wish we could read Kevin’s original treatment! I wonder if they still have it…

  10. that would be fucking awesome….. be calm dont, let youself wish, the opening is fine in S3

  11. I don’t want to be mean, but…
“I remember a sequence with an actor ‘Ben Damon’ in a car, where the killer was calling the actor from inside the trunk of the car.” – this is the kind of stuff Ehren Kruger does, unimaginative, among other things.

“There was an early version in Kevin’s original treatment where the opening sequence was Sidney and a friend being attacked at home, and then Sidney ultimately killing the killer – and unmasking the killer – and it’s some fan and this drives her into hiding.” – and this is Kevin’s stuff. Actually doing something new and unexpected.

I really “pray the lord” for get Kevin back on Scream 5, because I’m afraid we would get another Kruger script instead.

  12. I think that would be really good! Seeing Sidney in the opening would make the audience believe she was the opening kill, but her friend is instead. Scream is famous for breaking the rules. Why not break its own rules?

  13. The beginning with the friend and fan would have been cool!! “When you’re friends with Sid,you die…”

  14. you notice how in every scream they refrain from the fact of even saying stu is dead so maybe kevin is leaving open the option for stu’s revenge in a future sequel????????

  15. Kevin’s opening also better explains why Sid went into hiding. I mean yeah, the events of the first two were explanation enough, but I felt as if Sid was at “peace” at the very end of Scream 2, like she had become stronger. So seeing her in hiding at the beginning of S3 was a little random. Like there was a piece of the puzzle I had missed between the two films and now I realize it’s Kevin’s original opening.

But in a way I’m happy we got the Scream 3 we got, because if it would’ve been set in Woodsboro then what would be Scream 4’s charm? Us going back to Woodsboro after 15 years and re-visiting our favorite characters is the biggest reason why we’re all excited for Scream 4.

  16. JCM, I don’t think they’re consciously trying to avoid confirming Stu’s death. I mean come on, the dude had a fucking TV dropped on his head and was electrocuted. I could see if he was shot or something(Hell, Gale was and walked away fine) but I think it’s obvious he’s dead. I’d buy Randy still being alive over Stu.

  17. Khy I know he’s dead but I was just pointing it out, the last character I want to come back is stu or Randy for the matter I like it just being sydney gale and Dewey with extras that die

  18. “Ben Damon”…”#$!”?=%%&& Ehren Kruger.

  19. Actually, Khy, I’d say Sidney was far from peace at the end of Scream 2 – she was defeated and emotionally drained, hence the choice of song. For a second time, she’d lost all of her friends and the life she’d tried so hard to build after Woodsboro was completely decimated.

This would be the starting point of Sidney’s depression, I’d say, which is part of what drove her into hiding.

  20. I remember reading a screenplay (unofficial maybe) where chistine was found by cotton a la Casey hung from the H of the Hollywood sign. Now that I would have loved to have seen! Anyone else remember this?

  21. Yep, that was a fake script.

  22. does Still Screaming have an offical release date or is it not going to be released to the public???????
