Linday Lohan will star in Scream 5! Whoops, we meant Scary Movie 5. Phew… but seriously: Dimension are now rolling with the fifth Scary Movie, the franchise inspired by Scream. The Scream side never continued past the first movie, but the series has been decreasingly about horror movies. Now even more so. Via Dread Central:
According to Black Film, Malcolm Lee’s sequel for Dimension will star Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical), Terry Crews, Marisa Saks, Erica Ash, and Lindsay Lohan; returning to the franchise are Charlie Sheen, Simon Rex, and Molly Shannon. Despite numerous reports funnyman Kevin Hart is not included in the film, but added to the mix is comedian Roland “Lil Duval” Powell.
David Zucker is co-writing and producing Scary Movie 5 for an April 19, 2013, release.
The plot involves three dancers — one veteran performer and two upstarts who are also best friends — who vie for the lead in a new production from a snooty, aloof, imperious, and oversexed director. The reboot will spoof Black Swan, Paranormal Activity, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and 127 Hours.
This is a real shame. The original Scary Movie served an important function I feel, which was that it covered the same material as Scream but instead of being a satire, it was a spoof. Two sides of the same coin. The slasher movie may not be the current in-thing, but neither are the movies the new one is spoofing, which begs the question – why is this being made? Because Scary Movie is a name people know.
Although it certainly pains us to see Dimension cheaping out with their productions lately, let’s be glad it’s Scream sister franchise suffering these blows… and not Scream itself.
