Yeah, it seems decently liked, but on IMDb (yes, I know, IMDb sucks, blergh) and elsewhere I've noticed a lot of so-so reactions to it. In real life (as if I have one of those), most of the people I've watched it with do seem to be quite fond of it. Many of my family members, for example, consider it to be better than the original. But I dunno, I still don't feel that it's overrated, since the reaction is - at the very least - fairly mixed.

I guess it depends where you look and who you ask. In my experiences, S2 is usually rated pretty highly by many I've known.

I LOVE Scream 2. It isn't as good as the original, but it is basically right up there. The only reasons I put the original ahead of the sequel:

1. The opening with Casey Becker. Possibly the greatest horror movie opening of all time. At least the best I have ever seen.

2. The reveal with Billy coming back from the dead. CLASSIC twist.

I think it gets underrared sometimes.

Gale and Dewey are more fun to watch.

Randy feels like a more complete character.

Bringing back the Cotton Weary character was genius.

It feels like anything can happen.

So many characters. It feels like anyone could be the killer.

A lot of great, random scenes.

Cotton Weary showing up at the end.

Although it's longer, I actually think this is a little better paced. The original kind of lags in the middle.

^ i completely agree. i think that scream 2 is definitely a legit sequel to the first movie. While its not as good as the first, it still has alot of the same great qualities that made me love the first movie. i guess i just dont understand why some people, and i mean scream fans, i dont understand how you cant like scream 2 if you are a huge scream fan like me. but i mean whatever man everybody has there own opinion but it just has the same cool vibe to me. i fuckin love it

I can't imagine a better part 2 (besides maybe a few small things.) To me, it's always been more of a direct continuation of the first movie than a sequel. It's really the perfect companion piece to Scream 1. When it came out, everything still felt fresh and familiar to the original.
Mrs. Loomis was a genius and fitting choice, I thought.
Some say the pacing dragged, but I thought it was spot on - for good reason.. there was some pretty powerful stuff going on in Scream 2. Randy and Derek's death knocked the wind out of me. That sort of real-life emotion could've been lost if they rushed through the story. I think that's something Scream 4 suffered from.

I think Scream 2 can serve the human imagination in ways that are impressive, but much of the film can also just be surface-appeal; it isn't an actual success akin to The Conjuring 2, or Halloween 6.
The latter films are more scary, and have much more sympathetic characters.
