I'm going to play devil's advocate and say that Gale could be talking about solving the Maureen murder, then the Woodsboro Murders, and the Windsor murders. Really, the line is open to interpretation, but I agree that Gale is talking about the events of the previous three films.

Um, a huge way that it doesn't ignore it is...THE FILM IS 10 YEARS AFTER THE LAST EVENT...which is Scream 3. Ta-da!

and whoever said Cotton is stabbed in the forehead..he isn't. I did a frame-by-frame and what you see hit his forehead is the dangly, sleeve of the GF costume. We never see the knife go anywhere.

What character says "the film is 10 years after the last event"?

Maureen´s murder: 1995
Woodsboro murders: 1996
Windsor murders: 1998
Sunrise Murders: 1999

They may have ignored Scream 3 perfectly. Gale and Dewey are together at the end of Scream 2. They could have married.
I still think there are very few references to Scream 3. Scream 2 is constantly referenced through Stab. Scream 3 is referenced only once: the surname Roberts. Imposition of the Weinstein brothers. Originally they were Jill and Kate Kesler.

Scream 4 does not ignore the events of the first three films. The events of Scream 1, 2 and 3 were told in the movies Stab 1, 2 and 3. The original trilogy -- the films based off of a true story. This is mentioned several times in the film. Also, Gale tells Dewey in his office that she helped solve the murders "three times." Meaning she helped when it was Billy, when it was Mrs. Loomis and when it was Roman.

Also, showing Stab in Scream 4 is NOT a reference to Scream 2. It might be a sort of nod to Scream 2, but it is not a reference.

Case Closed.

They repeat even some Scream 2 lines. And yes, instead of taking into account the actual Woodsboro murders insists on referring to the movie Stab (Scream 2).

The plot of the movie is where it states it's 10 years after! And the creators.

Yeah, it doesn't ignore it. There are a number of tangible references that have been posted. I do think it's fair to say, however, that Scream 3 is given the least amount of direct references. This may be coincidental, it may be intentional.
